Burning and Copying VCDs, SVCDs, and DVD-Rs on a Mac

(I'm running OSX.3.2)

I DO NOT promise than any of this will work for you. However, everything I've written about using Toast does work for me.

A great place for help is dvdrhelp.com

Copying a VCD, SVCD or DVD-R (and some DVD+Rs) with Toast 5 or 6
Copying some troublesome DVD+Rs with Toast 6
Burning a DVD-R from a VIDEO_TS folder using Toast 5
Burning a DVD-R from a VIDEO_TS folder using Toast 6 or 7 <------- Most common
Burning a VCD from an mpeg1 using Toast 5
Burning an SVCD from and mpeg2 using Toast 5
Burning a VCD from a .bin file using Toast 5
Burning a DVD-R from an .iso file using Toast 5
I've never used these methods:
Burning a DVD-R from a VIDEO_TS folder using freeware (10.2 and up)
Copying a DVD-R or VCD with Disc Copy

If you have a VCD, SVCD or DVD-R (or some DVD+Rs***) that you wish to copy using Toast 5* or 6**

Put your VCD or DVD-R in your drive
Open Toast
Hit the Copy tab
Go up to the File tab and hit Save as Disc Image
Give it a name when it opens the dialog box
Wait several minutes
After it is done making a Disc Image, find it and double click it
Eject the original VCD or DVD-R from your drive
Put a blank DVD-R into your drive (or CD-R if you are making a VCD)
Hit Record
*** I think you can only see DVD+Rs on your Mac if you are running Panther. Also, this method doesn't work for all DVD+Rs. If Toast 6 (I've only tested this method using Toast 6) can't see your DVD+R, then try the next method.

If you have a DVD+R*** that Toast 6** is not seeing in the Copy tab

Put the DVD+R in the drive and wait for it to mount
Open Toast 6
Go to the Data tab and select DVD-ROM (UDF) from the left menu
Drag the DVD+R icon into the open Toast window
Go up to the File tab and hit Save as Disc Image
Give it a name when it opens the dialog box
Wait several minutes
After it is done making a Disc Image, find it and double click it
Eject the original DVD+R from your drive
Put a blank DVD-R into your drive (or CD-R if you are making a VCD)
Hit Record

If you downloaded the VIDEO_TS folder and wish to make a DVD-R using Toast 5*

Open Toast
Go to the Other tab and select DVD
*very important* Hit the New DVD button on the bottom of the window!
Give your Untitled DVD a title (or not, I just like to say what the show is)
Drag your VIDEO_TS folder into the window ** IT MUST BE NAMED VIDEO_TS TO WORK **
It is good practice to also add a blank AUDIO_TS folder (optional)
Put a blank DVD-R into your drive
Then hit record
If you downloaded the VIDEO_TS folder and wish to make a DVD-R using Toast 6 or 7**

Open Toast
Go to the Data tab and select DVD-ROM (UDF) from the left menu
*very important* Hit the New Disc button on the bottom of the window!
Give your Untitled DVD a title (or not, I just like to say what the show is - default is My Disc)
Drag your VIDEO_TS folder into the window ** IT MUST BE NAMED VIDEO_TS TO WORK **
It is good practice to also add a blank AUDIO_TS folder (optional) - you can also put in a text file or whatever else (I like to put them in an EXTRAS_TS folder) - picture
Put a blank DVD-R into your drive
Then hit record
If you have an mpeg1 that you wish to burn to VCD using Toast 5*

Open Toast
Go to the Other tab and select Video CD
Drag the mpeg file into the window
Put a blank CD-R in your drive
Then hit record
If you have an mpeg2 that you wish to burn to SVCD using Toast 5*

Open VCD Builder
Hit Close if the Create from Template window comes up
Go up to the Projects tab and select New Empty Project
You can hit Project Settings and give your SVCD a title
Drag the mpeg into the window
In the upper right hand corner, it now says Burn SVCD (if your mpeg is only VCD compliant, it will say Burn VCD)
Put a blank CD-R in your drive
Then hit record
(It will go through a bunch of steps and eventually open Toast to burn)
If you have a .bin file that you wish to burn a VCD using Toast 5*

Open Toast
Go to the Other tab and select Video CD
Drag the .bin file into the window
Put a blank CD-R in your drive
Then hit record
If you have an .iso file that you wish to burn to DVD-R using Toast 5*

Open Toast
Go to the Other tab and select Disc Image
Drag the .iso file into the window
Put a blank DVD-R in your drive
Then hit record
If you have a VIDEO_TS folder and want to burn it with freeware

Download DVD Imager (your must be on OX 10.2 at least)
Create a Disc Image from your VIDEO_TS folder
Open Disk Utility (in Applications/Utilities folder)
Drag the image into the window
Put a blank DVD-R in your drive
Hit the Burn button in the upper left corner of the window
(I've never used this method since I have Toast)

If you have a DVD-R that you wish to copy using Disk Copy

Put the DVD-R in your drive
Run Disk Copy
Drag the DVD-R onto the open window
Select a folder to save the Disk image
Wait several minutes
Eject your DVD-R
Put a new blank DVD-R in your drive
Hit the Burn DVDR button
(I've never used this method since I have Toast)

* I used Toast 5.1.3, so these steps have to do with that version
** I use Toast 6.0, so these steps have to do with that version
